A catalogue is something more like a collection of information/editorial that direct
gathering the key information of each lecture(analyze)
nicely organise the finished tasks throughout the term(exhibition review etc.)
by putting into images/reference to support
communicate your own point of view of the chosen topic(essay)
The exhibition comprises the artwork of Peter Kennard. Kennard is a British artist who is well known for his works that were mostly inclined to matters of politics as well as other critical issues that influence members of the society. The audience saw the displayed images without any strain. There is information in every artwork. The statement describes the art and also it shows the time the artwork was created. The information in the artwork is very crucial because it helps the audience understand the context of the image and the reasons it was created. Most of the artwork was from the experiences in Britain while others that had the theme of global politics.
Kennard describes different wars across the world giving some private information that most people could not have known. For instance, there is a painting of the Iraq war. There are medals with ribbons that have the ripped flags of the United States and the United Kingdom. There is also a background that is entirely black. The art describes the horrors of the Iraq war and the countries behind the war. Such art makes the audience understand the implication of the war.
His work also has the theme of war, human suffering, and poverty. He has described various forms of conflict that Britain has been involved in and the wars that the country has not been involved. Some paintings represent the cold war. These pictures make me get a deeper understanding of the context of the war and the weapons that countries were manufacturing so as to deter the enemies. A painting of a missile is one of the paintings that describe the world war. His artwork also illustrated human suffering, especially during wars. Most of the citizens suffer a lot as a result of these wars. Poverty is also a theme that arises from the concept of war.
Kennard’s artwork is significant in explaining and illustrating some of the concepts that could not be revealed to the audience on political matters. It enlightens the people on the ills of the political systems and some end results of the same. War is the principal finding that Kennard focuses on, and he shows how humans suffer from such acts.
In this week’s Monday session, we have been brought up two thought-provoking questions within the field of design, “what is wrong with graphic design?” and “what is underrepresented within graphic design?” At the very beginning of the lesson, our lecturer Ruth has given us a presentation of how she has taken the action towards the false use of graphics by using the social networks. From the feminism point of view, Ruth has pointed the gender issue as an example. It was really encouraging for me to know that somebody actually stood out to against the big publishers and websites for a better understanding of graphics. Therefore, start from this point, we were asked to have a discussion within groups to find out more mistakes that occur in graphic design. In the group of four, we have listed a few common technically ones, such as messy layout, illegible text, inappropriate typeface and too much information. As a conclusion, we have thought that designers should take more serious responsibility of graphic design and the industry needs more professional designers with design degrees rather than amateur.
Later in the second half of the session, we have been taught that social networks could be used not only as a good platform that gives everyone a voice, but also a really handy research tool by searching the hash tag. Again, we were asked to discuss in groups of what has been underrepresented in graphic design. But this time we were asked to give the answer with a hash tag. Each group has given out one idea and we voted for the most underrepresented. We then tweeted this hash tag so the message could be spread out and would be engaged with the others in the field of graphic design. This small action may not change much of the design industry, but I guess it is an exciting start.
